Welcome to Ruthlin

Ruthlin is an old farm, of mostly meadow-land, beside the River Monnow. It has a 16th century barn where the Buchanan family live, and a cottage built into the hillside which is available to rent.

Ruthlin is home to otters, kingfishers, dormice and a number of fairly domesticated pheasants who have escaped from local shoots. It can feel like a mini-Eden. For a few weeks we had two escaped cockerels ('Randolph and Mortimer'), until the inevitable foxes got to them.

Well. Sort of. Actually the River Monnow, the traditional border, has moved slightly and part of Ruthlin is now in Herefordshire. Still, you do get the best of both worlds: the Garway Moon in Herefordshire, and the Welsh market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth.

The Grounds

Dinner under the trees.

We have had 140 people for dinner in the past. This requires a lot of prayers for good weather, but as a location for a banquet nothing comes close.

More usually it is a table set for two beside the river. If you are interested in having a large dinner al fresco and are prepared to trust the elements, then get in touch.

Plan your stay.

Ruthlin is a working home, so you may see our teenage girls pretending to revise in the garden, but generally, if you are staying in the cottage, you will have the place to yourself. There are few places better to unwind, swim in the river and read a book.
